On a journey to provide scalable cloud infrastructure and help launch WordPress-based SaaS startups worldwide

"To ignite a new wave of independent SaaS initiatives globally"

WPCS is built by senior cloud engineers and full-stack developers that have spent more than a decade implementing DevOps best practices into building enterprise-level hosted SaaS solutions. Based on their years of experience and a growing irritation by a lack of DevOps in WordPress, they decided to bring you multi-tenant WordPress. Read our story below.

A Partnership to resell multi-tenant WordPress
Thursday, March 24, 2022
Launched Partner API
WPCS offers the option to resell the use of the WPCS platform. This takes the form of a licensing partnership to sublicense the use of the platform, possibly with white-label features.

Partners make use of our Partner API, which allows you to create subscriptions to WPCS. This includes Snapshots preloaded with features to use as templates for your customers. Your customers can choose to start their subscription with a preloaded Version, Snapshots, and Tenants (websites).

Depending on the potential of the partnership, the minimum agreed to purchase, and your region of operation, we can open a data center wherever you prefer.

PHP Constants in the Tenant Overview
You can insert license keys in new tenants for plugins that store the license key in the WP-config by defining them as a PHP constant in the tenant overview.

Next, we’ll make it possible to define PHP constants at the Version level as well. That will automatically insert these PHP constants for all tenants inside that Version.

Pre-seed investment
Next, it became clear that the only way to provide scale was to adopt a growth mentality for everything. That meant positioning ourselves as a SaaS startup. Four friends became "founders" when they joined the APX family in Berlin and received the first pre-seed investment.

“APX, backed by Axel Springer and Porsche, invested in WPCS because we strongly believe in the team and their product. WPCS is building a unique product creating a completely new way of working with WordPress that combines SaaS structures with the opportunities for WaaS businesses, and we are proud to be their partners on this venture.” - Henric Hungerhoff, Managing Director at APX

Leaving Beta
We knew we were ready for the world when we started onboarding corporate clients and larger Multisite networks. Until now, the Beta was free for everyone to try. On this day, we connected our Stripe account and started collecting payments. We felt we were almost ready to retire our agency and focus on our growing platform. All we needed now was some capital to make the leap...

Intercontinental availability: EU + US
After successfully launching in a Frankfurt datacenter, it was time to venture outside of Europe. On this day, we launched our North-Virginia datacenter and realized our dream of operating our business in the US also. Global availability awaits!

Tenant Snapshots
Our Snapshot feature is key to the WPCS platform: You deploy a Snapshot when you want to send changes to your Version directly to all Tenants. Snapshots also function as templates when (automatically) launching new Tenants.

Thanks to our early Beta testers and growing community, we were able to identify how to make this feature even more powerful: Tenant Snapshots. They allow you to create different templates for different products or plans to sell, that are still managed in one Version. You can unlock this by creating Snapshots of Tenants that live in the same Version.

Our Beta is live!
Although our console was very much still in development, we launched our platform with the key USPs that solve all 3 of WordPress' scaling challenges simultaneously:

multi-tenant WordPress, cloud scaling based on Kubernetes' orchestration, our Versioning System, and API.

From now on, anyone can solve all technical, development, and business scaling challenges related to WordPress and build a WordPress-based SaaS using the WPCS platform.

Dexter joins the club 🙂
The founding team becomes complete
WPCS needed a fourth co-founder to help usher in the era of multi-tenant WordPress. Another developer with years of engineering under his belt who understood the vision. Fortunately, we could rely on a published academic and cloud engineering veteran, who also just so happened to be our best friend of more than 20 years.

How WPCS started

A classic redemption story...
We (Wijnand, Sybren, and Roger) were building a SaaS in the years leading up to the pandemic, next to running a digital agency.

When the pandemic hit, the SaaS became redundant and the agency lost its clients. Because we were looking for an easy way to launch and manage websites at scale, we knew that we needed to build a tool that combined multitenancy with WordPress.

This tool would combine the scalability of SaaS with the accessibility of WordPress open-source. We were just scratching our own itch. In the process, we started to build a platform that solves all three scaling issues of WordPress simultaneously.

How WPCS started

Our Team

Roger, Sybren, Dexter, and Wijnand have been friends for more than 20 years. They’ve been building digital products for over a decade.

As agency owners, cloud engineers, and WordPress community members they decided to introduce modern DevOps and the scalable cloud infrastructure of SaaS to WordPress open-source.

With a rapidly growing team, they’re working hard to push the next frontier of WordPress development: building hosted SaaS solutions.
